Book Summary: In this first book of the Ever After High series, the second-year students know their roles. They will sign contracts to follow in their parents' footsteps, re-living the parts of famous tales. Raven is destined to be the Evil Queen in Snow White's story, and her mother embraced the part. But cruelty does not come naturally to Raven, and she is torn between loyalty to tradition and expectation, and the desire to be something completely new. Book Review: This book, by the author of Princess Academy, is much better suited to that title. It meets every expectation for a charming (if somewhat fluffy) tale that middle grade readers (4-6) might find delightfully indulgent. As you might expect from this author, there are crushes and word play, and the strong female characters' lives do not revolve around boys, whether they are selfish and petty or odd or uncertain. This book brings a lot more fashion and "girly" sensibility, and it has a more modern feel than some of Hale's other fairy tale versions. |
